Uncle Bill’s Pancake and Dinner House

Uncle Bill's Pancake and Dinner House

One of Chancellor Martin’s favorite local eateries, Uncle Bill’s Pancake and Dinner House is a St. Louis staple. I couldn’t pass up the chance to check it out when he asked me to join him there for an all-American breakfast. Open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Uncle Bill’s is perfect for early morning hangouts (or evening study sessions!) and will fill any cravings you may have for classic homestyle cooking. It’s also just a quick, 15-minute drive from campus located in the North Hampton neighborhood.

With unique architecture and design, the restaurant looked just like a vintage old English cottage. The walls were covered in artwork featuring favorite St. Louis landmarks and featured intricate designs incorporating the well-known St. Louis Fleur de Lis. It immediately gave off eclectic, yet homey vibes with a grand fireplace in the center of the dining room and old diner chairs/booths throughout.

The staff was exceptionally friendly and made sure we understood all the ins and outs of the expansive menu, which included not just breakfast favorites, but lunch and dinner options, too.

Knowing that they were the first pancake house in St. Louis, I knew I had to order an option that included their staple item. I chose the 2x2x2x2 (4D) which came with 2 eggs, 2 pancakes, 2 strips of bacon and 2 sausage links ($13.00). The Chancellor chose a favorite of his, the corned beef hash and 2 eggs which comes with a side of hashbrowns and, of course, pancakes ($12.20). We also had an order of the blueberry pancakes to taste, too ($10.80). The bottomless cups of coffee ($2.90) were a nice bonus as well.

If you love breakfast food (like me!) you won’t be disappointed. My meal was delicious and I would definitely go back again to try one of the other many items on the menu. The pancakes were fluffy with just the right thickness, had a spoonful of melting butter, and held up to their hype. The cozy atmosphere and quintessential comfort food will make you feel like you’re home. I can now see why the Chancellor likes to frequent Uncle Bill’s often!
